Idaho Spud Chocolate
The Idaho Spud is a candy bar that is made by the Idaho Candy Company and was first manufactured in 1918. The Idaho Candy Company itself was founded in 1901 by Thomas Ovard “T.O.” Smith, who began making chocolates in his garage and selling them door-to-door before establishing the company.
The Idaho Spud is made with chocolate flavoured soft, marshmallow centre that’s enrobed in dark chocolate and sprinkled with coconut. It’s distributed primarily throughout the Pacific Northwest and has become a regional favourite.
The bar’s popularity peaked in the past, as indicated by its ranking as the 30th most popular ten-cent bar in the United States in 1971.
In 2021, the Idaho Candy Company sold around 2 million Idaho Spud bars. The majority of these sales, possibly around 60%, occur within Idaho itself, with the remainder spreading to other states.

The Idaho Spud chocolate bar contains the following ingredients: sugar, corn syrup, coconut, partially hydrogenated palm kernel oil, invert sugar, corn starch, cocoa powder, chocolate liquor, egg albumen, agar, citric acid, sodium metabisulfite, salt, artificial flavor, and potassium sorbate (a preservative).

The Idaho Spud candy bar has been advertised with the slogan “The Candy Bar That Makes Idaho Famous”. This tagline has contributed to the candy bar’s identity and has been a part of its marketing efforts, emphasizing its unique connection to the state of Idaho.
TRADITIONAL SWEETS HISTORY
Irish Potato Candy
Irish Potato Candy is a traditional confection that, despite its name, does not actually contain any potatoes. These sweet treats are made mainly from cream cheese, coconut, sugar, and cinnamon. They are shaped into small, potato-like ovals and rolled in cinnamon to give them the appearance of tiny, freshly dug potatoes. This candy is particularly associated with the Philadelphia area and is popular around St. Patrick’s Day.
Oh Ryan’s of Boothwyn, Pennsylvania, claims to be the largest distributor of Irish Potato Candy. As of 2017, Oh Ryan’s has sold 95,000 pounds of Irish potato candy, which works out to approximately 2,800,000 individual candies.
There are also variations on the traditional Irish Potato Candy. While the classic recipe includes cream cheese, coconut, sugar, and cinnamon, some variations include using the cocoa powder or cinnamon mixture for rolling the candies to give them the brown, earthy appearance of real potatoes.
Other recipes also include nuts such as walnuts or pecans for added texture and flavor and to make them look like the potato eyes. There are also variations that incorporate small amounts of vanilla extract or almond extract to enhance the taste.
A few recipes might swap out cream cheese for mashed potatoes, although this is less common and goes back to the original concept behind the candy’s name.

Cadbury’s Ice Breaker – discontinued
The only UK chocolate bar beginning with ‘i’ is Ice Breaker, which was made by Cadbury’s in the 1970’s and has been long discontinued.
Ice Breaker was a creation by Cadbury, featuring a dark chocolate bar infused with bits of mint. It was easily recognizable by its glossy, light blue packaging with a white zig zag reminiscent of a lightning bolt. There was a memorable advertisement that showed the Ice Breaker bar being broken in half along this distinctive zig zag design. It was apparently just a TV trick and the actual chocolate bar could never be snapped in a zig zag way.
I should also mention, that the current ‘Ice Breakers’ brand is a brand of sugar-free mints and chewing gum produced by The Hershey Company in the United States. They are not chocolate bars and as far as I know, they don’t have a chocolate flavoured version, as these are mainly sour sweets.
IBC Root Barrels
IBC Root Beer Barrels are hard candies that encapsulate the flavor of IBC root beer, a popular brand of root beer that has been around since 1919. The candies are shaped like barrels, which is a nod to the traditional storage and transport method for root beer. The IBC (Independent Breweries Company) was founded by the Griesedieck family in St. Louis, Missouri. The root beer barrels candy is a way to enjoy the taste of IBC root beer in a solid, sweet form. Each piece is individually wrapped, making them a convenient treat to enjoy on the go.
Ice Breakers (Hershey’s)
Ice Breakers is a brand of mints and chewing gum owned by The Hershey Company. The brand was originally created by Nabisco in 1996, offering a line of mints and gum designed to provide a refreshing, mouth-cooling sensation. Ice Breakers were first produced by Nabisco, the same company known for making LifeSavers candy, and they quickly became popular for their intense minty flavors and their unique packaging, which often featured a dual-opening container that allowed consumers to dispense one mint or several at a time.
In 2000, The Hershey Company acquired Ice Breakers as part of a larger purchase from Nabisco, which also included other brands like BREATH SAVERS Mints and BUBBLE YUM Bubble Gum.
Ice Cubes (Nappo)
Ice Cubes are small, bite-sized chocolates that have very smooth texture and rich chocolate flavour. They have a unique, almost ice-like appearance and are often described as having a cool, melt-in-your-mouth quality.
The candies have been around since the mid-1930s and are made in Germany by Nappo, which is indeed a small company. Ice Cubes have a loyal following due to their distinctive taste and texture. They are particularly popular in the United States, where they are sold by various candy distributors.
ICEE Squeeze Candy
The ICEE Squeeze Candy is a product that has the flavours of the iconic ICEE frozen drink in a squeezable liquid candy form. ICEE was invented in 1958 by Omar Knedlik, a dairy owner in Coffeyville, Kansas. The creation of the ICEE drink was somewhat serendipitous, resulting from a broken soda fountain that led Knedlik to freeze his sodas. Customers loved the slushy drinks, which led to the development of the ICEE machine and the brand as we know it today.
The ICEE Squeeze Candy takes inspiration from the original ICEE flavors, providing a sweet, tangy treat that’s reminiscent of the frozen slush.
Iron Brew Chocolate Bar
Iron Brew (often stylized as Irn-Bru) chocolate bars are a unique confectionery inspired by Scotland’s famous carbonated soft drink, Irn-Bru. The soft drink itself has a long and storied history, having been first produced in 1901 by A.G. Barr of Glasgow. Known for its bright orange color and distinctive flavour, which is a combination of 32 flavors, Irn-Bru has often been described as “Scotland’s other national drink” (after whisky).
The chocolate bars are a more recent innovation, created to capture the essence of the Irn-Bru flavour in a solid form. They often incorporate popping candy to mimic the fizzy sensation of the soft drink. The Quirky Gift Library Iron Brew Chocolate Bar, for instance, is part of a Scottish collection and features a bold sleeve design that pays homage to its Scottish roots. These bars are not only visually striking but also aim to deliver a taste experience that resonates with the iconic beverage’s fans.
The name “Iron Brew” couldn’t be used after branding laws proposed that the product name must be a literal description. Since the drink wasn’t brewed, the name was changed to “Irn-Bru” in 1946. The recipe for Irn-Bru is a closely guarded secret, known only to two people in the world at any given time – a tradition that adds to the drink’s mystique.
Ice Blue Mint Squares
Ice Blue Mint Squares have cool peppermint flavor and blue color. Primrose Candy Company, which produces these mints, is a confectionery manufacturer that has been in business since 1928 and is based in Chicago, Illinois.
The Ice Blue Mint Squares from Primrose are cube-shaped and typically come individually wrapped. They are made with a simple list of ingredients, including sugar, corn syrup, natural peppermint oil, and menthol, providing a strong, refreshing taste. The blue color of the mints is achieved using Blue 1 dye. These candies are often enjoyed for their ability to freshen breath and offer a long-lasting peppermint flavor.
